TGS 2004: closing remarks

By David Craddock

The 2004 Tokyo Game Show has ended, but the news that came from the expo is certainly still ringing in the ears of gamers around the globe.

This year’s TGS marked the first time that playable software for the PSP was shown, with games such as Need for Speed – Underground Rivals and Metal Gear Acid stealing the show. However, not all news that emanated from the show was positive.

Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi broke the news that the online component of GT4 was removed, citing possible game delays as the main cause for concern. At this point, Yamauchi-san feels it’s important to get the game out onto store shelves, instead of continuously working on something that just won’t be ready in time for the busy holiday season. However, an online GT title is tentatively planned for next year, which is cause for excitement. After all, given time and extensive tweaking, an online mode for Gran Turismo will be a dream come true, and it’s up to the fans to trust the developers to deliver the goods when they’re ready.

Lastly, many games that were shown at E3-Halo 2, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid 3-remained virtually unchanged from May’s event. While in some cases a new trailer was shown, the fact that many aspects appeared unchanged isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After all, the aforementioned games looked so polished around May, most of us just wanted to cut to the chase and purchase them immediately!

All in all, this year’s Tokyo Game Show was exciting, but now the biggest yearly event of all is preparing to kick off: the Christmas season! Stay tuned to MyGamer.com as we bring you all the latest news about your favorite upcoming games.
