Sony exec accuses Microsoft of copycatting

"I didn't hear any bell." "Ding, Ding." -Rocky III

Finger pointing began again in the war of words between two of the next-generation platform makers. This time it is SCEA boss Kaz Hirai accusing Microsoft of constantly copying ideas and following Sony's lead.

Hirai told the Official PlayStation Magazine, "Every time we go down a path, we look behind and [Microsoft is] right there – we just can't shake these guys. I wish that they would come up with some strategies of their own, but they seem to be going down the path of everything we do."

He further slammed Xbox's choice of offering a HD-DVD as a separate optional drive instead of supporting the Blu-Ray drive saying, "'So, talk to me about this Blu-ray add-on that you have. Does it work for games? Is it just for movies?' That's exactly the kind of pitfall you fall into if you launch something that's too early, too premature…"

Some observers find this assault interesting considering Sony has been accused of copying ideas in the past. Just recently, questions were asked at E3 when Sony unveiled its motion sensing controllers for the PS3. Some say the controllers were influenced by the Wii's remote control, but the execs at Sony contend that the concept has been in development for years.
