Expected

Using the COD4 engine, Bond’s latest adventure is exactly what you would expect from a movie based shooter.

Instead of being just a FPS, the player now has the ability to take cover behind walls, similar to Rainbow 6 Vegas.  When this happens, the camera cuts back to a third person perspective allowing the player to see the face of Daniel Craig, the latest James Bond actor.  For the most part, the gameplay is solid and definitely playable but doesn’t really push anything to the limit nor does it try to do anything new.

Strangely enough, most of this game takes place during the events of the previous movie, Casino Royale.  Because so much of this game revolves around this first movie it seems like the developers did not have access to the events of Quantum of Solace but needed to make a game to coincide with the movie.  Although the two movies are related, it is kind of false advertisement to call this game Quantum of Solace when so much of this game is about the first movie.

It seems like everything in this game is based on routine.  Run around, take cover, shoot, repeat.  The developers seemed so proud of their newly created cover mechanic that they use it to the point of exhaustion.  Toward the end of the game, the player might attempt to run and gun just to try something new.  Again, the gameplay is not broken, it basically defines the term “average.”

There is multiplayer support up to 12 players online, but there is only your typical deathmatch options.  There is no co-op.  There is no 8v8 option.  There isn’t a huge long drawn out single player plot line.  In fact, the game will only last about 4-5 hours so expect to try out the multiplayer for a while to get your money worth.

As far as the visuals go, environments and character models are decent enough, but there will be some repetition, especially in the character death animations.  The game engine doesn’t seem as stable as it was in COD4 because there will be an occasional frame rate issue and clipping instances, however, it doesn’t really ruin the overall experience.

This may seem like a short review, but there really isn’t much to talk about.  Any gamer can probably immediately tell what kind of gaming experience they are going to have just by looking at the cover.  And basically everything from that initial two second assumption will be correct in this case.  Just an average shooter.
