Buck – Alpha Version Live Preview

Old Dog, New Tricks

The only post-apocalyptic 2D brawler with all human type cat and dog hybrids.

Coming Q2 of 2017, this new 2D beat-em-up/brawler is trying to marry a lot of different styles into one cohesive story. With elements of Noir, post apocalypse environments, heavy character development, weapon crafting, and a character choice driven story, this is an epic level task put on Wave Interactive.

Buck is set to release on on PC, Mac, LinuxXbox One and PlayStation 4! Inspired by Shank and Dust: An Elysian Tale inspired adventure, Buck is a 2D adventure that’s set in a haunted and sombre post-apocalyptic wasteland. You play as Buck, a motorcycle garage mechanic who decides to leave everything he knows behind in order to find the truth behind a girl’s disappearance; all while struggling to adjust himself to a world he doesn’t fully understand.

Trained by his stepdad to fight, shoot and fix nearly anything, Buck can take on, and surprise, even the biggest of brutes by his speed, strength and utter determination. Traverse the arid, unforgiving wastelands while fighting its fierce inhabitants.   Players will have to brawl, or talk, their way though junkyards, mountain passes, ghost towns and survivor outposts, while trying to piece together what brought this world, and its rugged people, to their knees.

I got the chance to play a bit of the demo, and I have to say that I’m intrigued. It’s so far away from release that it’s hard to do be very critical, but I can definitely see the beginnings of a good game. Sure, it has flaws like the hero being made of glass, and some platforming issues, but so many games today worry about nothing but graphics that it’s nice to see someone going for broke on artistry and story.

There’s a real unique art style present here that mixes a world of anthropomorphized dogs and cats with something you might see from Mad Max. It’s a mash up I haven’t seen before, that also lends itself well to the game styles of survival and brawlers. Since a good story is at the heart of all Noir type games, they have setup a good set of conditions for that dream to become reality, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
